About the Event
Walking the Nakasendo Trail in Japan – Wendy Slattebo
The Nakasendo Trail linked Kyoto to Tokyo during Japan’s Edo period (1603-1867). It was the road through the mountains traveled by feudal lords and their retinues, samurai, merchants, and travelers. Along the road were 69 post towns where travelers could rest before continuing on the next leg of their journey. In May of 2014, Wendy traveled to Japan with two friends to walk the Kisoji section of the Nakasendo Trail. By day, they walked along the ancient route as it passed through beautifully preserved old post towns as well as bamboo forests and fields and mountain passes. Each night they stayed in small family-run country inns (ryokan and minshuku).
