About the Event

Thailand:  Markets, Temples, and Elephants – JoAnn Pierson

The Kingdom of Thailand, formerly known as Siam, is unique.  Unlike other Southeast Asian countries, it has developed its culture independent of Western colonialism.  JoAnn’s presentation will examine Buddhism’s place in Thai culture and feature three ancient temples in or near Bangkok plus two old ones in Chiang Rai, rebuilt as art exhibits in the style of a Buddhist temple.  She will take us to flower and food markets, which are plentiful, colorful, and fun to experience, featuring the famous floating farmer’s market, the very unusual Railway Market, and a country market that serves the needs of the local population. JoAnn will also take us to Chiang Mai for a visit to the Thai Elephant Care Center, a home for elderly elephants retired from logging camps and elephant shows.  Join us at the Concord Public Library's Fowler Branch for this exciting armchair adventure to Thailand!
