San Miguel de Allende – The Heart of Mexico
Pam will be taking us with her on a trip to San Miguel de Allende, her favorite winter destination, describing its many Cs – Climate, Culture, Creativity, Color, Cuisine, and Cost. High in the cool hills, this colonial gem of cobblestone streets and picturesque churches inspires artists with its color, character, and light. Founded in 1542, the city is a mix of Hispanic and Mesoamerican influences, its buildings a combination of baroque, neoclassical, and neogothic architecture. So join Pam for an exploration of the destination awarded this fall by Travel + Leisure “Best Overall City in the World.”
Directions to Trask House, Manchester Historical Museum, 10 Union Street, Manchester-on-the-Sea
[Note: If you use GPS to drive to the Trask House, the directions on map apps are fine, but there is no parking there. You must follow the directions below to park across the street behind Town Hall, where parking is free. Entrance to Trask House is in back.]
Drive from Boston, Cambridge, or the Western Suburbs:
Get on 93N, Rte 1N, or 95N toward 95N/128N toward Peabody and Gloucester.
When 95N and 128N split near Peabody, stay on Rte 128N toward Gloucester.
Follow MA-128N for about 15 minutes to Exit 49, Pine Street, Manchester.
From the ramp off Rte 128, turn left onto Pine Street toward Manchester.
After 1.4 miles, at the end of Pine Street, turn left onto Rte 127N.
The Trask House is 0.2 miles on your left at 10 Union Street (Rte 127). No parking is available, so just before you get to the Trask House, turn right at the driveway (Church Street) just past “Seaside One,” an old fire house, which is just before Town Hall. Park in the free parking lot behind Town Hall and walk back around Town Hall, crossing the street to the Trask House.
Commuter Rail Directions:
If you cannot carpool or drive yourself, you can take the Rockport commuter train from Boston’s North Station to Manchester and back to Boston. The Trask House is a 10-minute walk from the train station (see map), or someone can meet you and drive you there. Please notify Francie Caudill <frances.caudill@gmail.com> ASAP if you plan to take the train and will need to be met. Train times:
Leave North Station @ 10:35am, Arrive Manchester @ 11:25am
Leave Manchester @ 2:03pm, Arrive North Station @ 2:59pm
