Madagascar: Land of Lemurs – Zarin Machanda
Around 90 million years ago, what is now the island nation of Madagascar separated completely from mainland African and Asia. Although only 250 miles off the coast of Mozambique, this was enough distance to allow the island to evolve in isolation resulting in biodiversity and ecosystems unlike anywhere else found on the planet. Just two weeks after returning from Uganda with her fellow WTC travelers, Zarin traveled to Madagascar in July of 2025. Traveling with two of her friends, she visited several National Parks, mostly on a quest to see as many species of lemurs (a group of primates only found on the island) as possible. During her talk, Zarin will share the remarkable biodiversity that she encountered and explain the evolutionary story of Madagascar and why this place is unique.
