What distinguishes Ethiopia from other African countries? During Deborah’s trip last year, she discovered how Ethiopia’s centuries-old religious traditions, its fierce independence and complex history of competing dynasties, its ancient architectural masterpieces, and its unique geography and location within the Horn of Africa all play a role in making it a fascinating destination for travel and learning.
She was particularly keen to explore its many high-altitude “ecological islands,” which serve as sanctuaries for hundreds of endemic plants and animals. Although a weak infrastructure makes touring a challenge, particularly for independent travelers, Ethiopia is a welcoming country. Deborah will share her impressions and experience with the hope that kindred hikers, birders, and those interested in architecture and cultural heritage will gain a deeper understanding of the country’s immense diversity.
