About the Event
Dutch Burghers and Sri Lanka: When West Meets East – Maria Shepherd
You probably know that Sri Lanka is associated with the Tamils and Sinhalese ethnic groups, as well as smaller groups of Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, and Christians. But have you heard about the Dutch Burghers? Maria’s paternal grandparents were Sri Lankan, but it wasn’t until about seven years ago that she learned that she descended from this group. Please join Maria as she takes us on her own personal journey of discovery in the context of her ancestors and present family, learning about this small but important ethnic group who still inhabit Sri Lanka today.
